I Quit My Job Two Years Ago Today…Here’s How That Worked Out!
Nov 28, 2016
Look at God!
Two years later and there’s so much to celebrate! The day I packed my bags and walked off my job I had no clue where life would take me. How would I survive? How would I make money? Many of my readers have been following my journey since leaving mainstream media as a TV anchor to becoming a freelance journalist, TV host and writer. I wrote this blog marking the one year anniversary of that bold move and since then I’ve been bombarded with questions, stares and doubts. There have been those who rooted me on and saw nothing but potential and possibility and those who took more of a wait and see approach. I was walking away from a job where I was making a salary, had “stability,” allowed me to pay my bills on time, but that was also sucking the life out of me! I felt drained, tired and mentally defeated as I slaved away building someone else’s dream while my own withered away.

Slowly but surely, bit by bit I chipped away at my opportunities, made contacts, networked and kept my name and face relevant. I toyed with many avenues, had many frustrating and tearful days. There were days I questioned my decision, regretted them and even reluctantly scrolled the newspaper looking for a new job.
Ha!
Deep down inside I knew I was only fooling myself, giving into the fear of being on my own when it’s exactly what I wanted. So with a little help from friends and family I slowly carved out a lane for myself and one I’m satisfied with. I remember blogging about how annoyed I got when someone would ask me where I worked and I couldn’t answer right away because I was still in transition. But today, I can proudly proclaim:
I am a freelance journalist, a TV show host, TV producer, writer, voice talent, social media manager and lifestyle blogger!

It took me forever to really streamline what it is that I wanted to do with my skill sets and talent; but the more I blogged, the more I wrote, the more I hosted and produced shows, the career thing pretty much took care of itself and then people started to notice. I got more and more calls and emails, more gigs lined up and…this all started to make sense.

I soon realised that the saying is true, “When do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life!” I mean, work gets done because those coins have to be made, honey, but it all comes so naturally, so organically to me that work feels like a breeze…and that’s exactly what I was going for!
Stress -free. Fulfilling. Accomplished.
I’m so happy to check in for this two-year report and track all the success I’ve had as a freelancer. I’m not one to brag or boast, but I think it’s oh, so necessary to stop and self-evaluate every now and again to make changes, celebrate or do both!

There’s no set monthly salary, no corporate backing, no schedules, sometimes no desk, no office space with an ocean view, no automatic insurance and pension plan, no set vacation days (which I love!), no holiday bonuses or yearly increments . But here’s what I do have:
Since leaving my job, I can honestly say this is the most successful I’ve been in my career. Just when it seems like I was tearing everything down, it was all building up and preparing me for this time, RIGHT NOW! I had to take that leap of faith, I had to take the chance and I had to step out and take the risk. Two years later and I’m so proud and blessed to say that it all worked out and will continue to.

Great story! The beginning of a journey… If you don’t know where you came from, you don’t know where you are headed. Not only do you know where you are headed… you are definitely on the right track! Your personality was made for TV!! I watched you grow… my God continue to bless you and your endeavours!
What kinds words! Thank you so much and I wish nothing but success for you too!
My teenage son is also a professional blogger. After graduating, he chose to relocate & blog from South America rather than pursue a ‘traditional’ 9 to 5. Your story is inspirational not only for those planning to escape the corporate grind, but for younger ones leaving school with talents and a desire to set their own career paths, on their own terms.
Amazing! I’m so happy he followed his heart and not society’s rules. I’m sure he’s on to greatness once he remains focused and creative! Kudoss to him. send the link to his site, I’d love to see his work.
Inspiring and encouraging! Definitely what I needed to inspire me to take a leap of faith!
I love it! Thanks so much for reading and I’m glad to be of some inspiration!

I left my very comfy job in August. My office, my salary, my comfort, but I also left unwanted stress, anxiety, pressure and a boss who wanted everything from me but was not willing to support me. I left a place where I was building someone else’s dream to go and build my castle in the sand or a snow bank. It’s hard but I have enjoyed every moment of it.
Hi Dieulita! Way to go! I honestly think at some point in everyone’s life they should take time off from the traditional job! Explore new options, try being an entrepreneur, GO AFTER YOUR OWN DREAMS! After all this is life, you could always find another job! At least give it a shot. Kudos to you!
You are truly an inspiration and this blog gave me life. May God continue to bless you on your journey. Wishing you continued success????
Thank you so much for the kind words! Blessings to you as well and much success!
So good to read the above. Super encouraging. Big Risk: Randomly Returning to the Bahamas as an American citizen, returning my brand new car, letting go of my gated community deluxe place after a pay increase at Michael Kors to pursue my dream and my annual sponsored fashion showcase in New Mexico #unbelievable to even type

Love your story. I too walked away from the corporate world to do my own thing. Its only been 5 months, so thanks for the inspiration that things will get better. I’m enjoying it now but there are times when fear rears its ugly head. But I’m kickin and screamin my way to the top. Rock On Girl!
