Fabulous Freeport! A Weekend in The Magic City!
Apr 18, 2016
The Magic City is still magical!
If you’re looking for a low key, relaxing island getaway where the location is pregnant with old school culture and history, but still laced with modernity and newness, then Freeport, Grand Bahama should be your next landing strip.
I traveled to The Bahamas’ second city over the weekend for work, but as with any business trip I take, I find time to sightsee, relax, enjoy and be a tourist…even in my own country. The BTC TV Show (which I host) took our crew to the island for the 2016 Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Kickoff and the more I visit Freeport, the more I fall in love with the place.
While the “pop down” vibes might take a little getting used to, I’ve found that with less traffic, less people, less talking, less cars and less stress, compared to Nassau’s levels, you get to enjoy the island much more. For some reason the blues seem bluer, the air is much fresher, you can taste the salt in the air and you get to immerse yourself in nature, with no rush.
Port Lucaya is indeed my favorite place to visit! It’s so vibrant with culture, color and character! With restaurants sprawled across the market, junkanoo, art, Bahamian music and shopping, Port Lucaya can kidnap me for forever! I absolutely love to eat at Zorbas and Agave!
The Grand Bahama airshow was the perfect addition to the carnival kickoff lineup this year! I was super excited to see it on the agenda and knew I had to be there. The iconic Taino Beach was the site! Fast planes, loud noises, tailspins, dives in the air, coming dangerously close to the sea and the crowd? I loved every minute of it! My inner tomboy was pleased!
After a weekend of work, sleepless nights and too much partying, relaxing by the pool at the Pelican Bay Hotel was just what I needed! Topped off by dinner at Pier One and shark feeding, the weekend was just magical! The Magic City certainly delivered!
Live. Love. Write it Down.
I MISSED THE AIR SHOW! You are so correct! It is a delightful place to visit. The stillness allows for great comradery and companionship.! Let us know when you’re headed there again!
